This Cubby Shelf Organiser was built completely using pallet wood and looks elegant after a layer of paint. This cubby shelf can be used to store letters, keys or decorative items and will look great on hallway walls.
The overall dimension of this cubby shelf is 32cm width, 32cm height and 16cm depth. This cubby shelf organiser can be built with different dimensions based on how you want to use it and what you want to store in it.
Cut pallet wood to from sides, top and shelves
I started with some pallet wood obviously and prepared the wood by planing and then using jointing using the table saw. This ensured the wood I am using has straight edges.
I started creating the two side walls by joining two pieces of pallet wood to form a single board. I glued them together and waited it to dry.
Draw a shape and cut the sides
Once the boards were dry I drew a shape free hand on the joined boards. You can come up with any shape you need based on the look you are after. Once the shape was ready on the board, I used by band saw to cut the correct shape. I used this as a reference to cut the same shape on the board of the remaining side.
Meanwhile, I joined 2 boards together to form the shelf. I made two of these to from the top and bottom shelf. I joined two more boards to form the top of the cubby shelf.
Align the sides, top and shelves
Once the boards were dried and ready, I aligned them as below to make sure they align correctly.
I aligned them and checked how they would look once glued up just to make sure its as per my expectation. As expected, the alignment looks great as shown below.
Next I created the shelf and glued the top and bottom shelf with a separator as shown below. You can change this configuration based on your requirements. I divided the space equally using the separator. I glued the shelves with the separator and left them to dry.
Glue up
I joined the dried up shelves to the sides of the cubby shelf. Then I used a router to create a decorative edge for the cubby shelf top. I decorated only the front, left and right sides and left the back of the top board flat.
I glued the shelves and the sides together and clamped them and left them to dry. I clamped the top as well to the shelf at the same time so that the whole frame would be ready together.
Attach hooks
Then I used some old Ikea hooks, cut them to the desired width and screwed them to a pallet board as shown below to form the hooks rack.
I then fixed the hooks along with the board to the back of the cubby shelf so that the bottom of the hooks board aligns with the bottom of the two sides of the cubby shelf.
I sanded the glued up cubby shelf and applied a coat of wood paint after sanding all the surfaces. I chose a lawn green colour as it looks really vibrant especially in the hallway.
